Genesis Midwifery is a practice in Staunton that specializes in home births. The center is staffed by two midwives who have tons of both professional and personal experience. Kelly Becker and Heather Sopher both had hospital births that they didn’t exactly love. While Kelly was able to have her first birth unmedicated, the hospital atmosphere had left her feeling overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Heather had an epidural and an episiotomy against her wishes. Eventually, both would have a natural home birth and quickly realized just how profound the experience was. They made it their mission to help other parents across the area have a delivery that worked for them.
Today, the practice operates using whole-woman care. While they are going to check on your baby and your pregnancy’s progression, they are going to take the time to get to know you and check on your emotional and mental well-being. They are also going to put education at the center of their appointments. You will have all the knowledge you need to make the decisions that are right for you. This personalized approach will ensure you can be ready to have the birth experience you have always pictured. The practice works with people in Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Lexington, Harrisonburg, and Richmond. Both midwives are trained in CPR and safety, so you never have to stress.
Services
Before you commit to Genesis Midwifery’s services, the center will provide you with a free consultation with the providers. During this time, you will be able to have an open conversation and find out what your care will look like through them. This way, you can feel confident with your selection before your first appointment even begins! The midwives use caseload midwifery and only take 2-4 client due dates each month. This gives them the ability to be undistracted throughout the entirety of your care. It also ensures you will see the same midwife throughout each appointment.
Your first visit will start when you are around 12 weeks along. With each prenatal visit, they will come to your house and perform care in the space where you feel most comfortable. These visits are always going to be unrushed. Your provider is going to sit down with you and chat about your symptoms. They are going to help you know what is normal and what you can expect throughout the coming months. The team also uses these visits to help you start creating your birth plan. They will inform you of everything you need to know so you can have the birth that is right for your family. If you choose to have ultrasounds, these will also be performed within your house.
Labor And Beyond
As you get closer to your due date, Genesis Midwifery will help you prepare your house for delivery. Once it’s go-time, you can count on them to be by your side! They used evidence-based monitoring protocols so they can be sure your delivery is progressing as needed. At the same time, you will be able to move around and get through labor however you need. The practice has water birth options. If you choose to use this, you will be able to rent out one of the birth pools.
Once it is time, they will help you into the water. Following labor, they will immediately initiate skin-to-skin for a minimum of one hour. They will delay cord clamping and let you just focus on bonding with your baby. You will then take a shower while they monitor your newborn and clean up the space. For the next 3 hours, they will remain with you so you can get any care you need.
You will have postpartum visits in-home, and you will have direct access to your midwife so you can ask any questions and have immediate answers.
Specialty
While Genesis Midwifery does specialize in home births, they will also support you through hospital deliveries. With this option, you can count on receiving the same exceptional care you can expect from their home birth services. They will still provide you with in-home prenatal care that is both thorough and unrushed. They will spend this time monitoring your progress and making sure you have all the information you need for your delivery.
The midwives do not have hospital privileges, so they cannot be the primary provider for your delivery. Nonetheless, they will remain there so you can have a fierce advocate in the room. They will serve as your doula and provide prenatal records if they cannot be present for any reason. You will still receive in-home postpartum and newborn care following your delivery. They will be there to talk through your experience and be sure you are on the road to recovery.
